The course is intended for Mechanical Engineering Technicians employed in design, manufacturing, maintenance, energy supply industries, Royal Air Force, Regional Hospitals and Local Authorities.

Programme Aim:

The course is intended for Mechanical Engineering Technicians employed in design, manufacturing, maintenance, energy supply industries, Royal Air Force, Regional Hospitals and Local Authorities.

Programme Content:
Eleven units will be covered over a two-year period of study.

Year 1      
• Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
• Communications for Technicians   
• Mechanical Principles    
• Mathematics for Technicians   
• Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
• Engineering Drawing for Technicians  
       
Year 2
• Project (Double Unit)
• Further Mechanical Principles & Applications
• Electrical & Electronic Principles


PLUS TWO OF THE FOLLOWING OPTIONAL UNITS;
• Principles & Applications of Thermodynamics
• Computer Aided Draughting
• Engineering Secondary and Finishing Processes
• Computer Numerical Control of Machine Tools

• Four GCSE’s at Grade C or above, including Maths and Science 
• Suitable passes in BTEC First Certificate in Engineering
• At the discretion of the College for experienced mechanical technicians

Teaching and Learning Styles:

Learning will consist of taught lessons, investigations, projects and assignments.  Learners will demonstrate an understanding of each unit’s outcomes in a variety of ways.  These may include assignments, timed assessments and course work.  The assessment methods will vary to suit the unit.

Achievement, Assessment and Examinations:

The college is committed to maintaining Records of Achievement and providing appropriate feedback through action planning.  This course is the equivalent to two GCE A levels between 80 and 240 UCAS tariff points depending upon final grades achieved.

Progression:

Students who successfully complete this course can progress to our BTEC Higher National Certificate in Engineering.

Students aged 16-18 years
The government funds the majority of courses for students aged 16-18 years.

Students aged 19-23 years
Some courses are subsidised by the government.  You may be entitled to a discount for these courses dependant upon your circumstances.
2013/14 Fees for this course are: Year 1 £1207.50, Year 2 £1042.50

Students aged 24+ years
