The programme has been developed for those who are intending to follow a career in mechanical, manufacturing or motor sports engineering and wish to follow an alternative route to that of A Levels and sixth form. Although the programme is vocationally orientated towards engineering, it will not prevent anyone from selecting other career routes at a later stage.
The Level 3 Extended National Diploma is worth 180 QCF credits. At full distinction level the course is worth 420 UCAS points, the equivalent to three A* A levels, for progression to university or other higher education centres for degree and higher national qualifications. Entry to higher apprenticeship and graduate apprenticeship schemes is enhanced by the vocational background to the course. This vocational background also allows entry into the workplace in the mechanical, manufacturing and motorsport industries, from design and project engineering jobs through to engineering management.
The programme consists of associated subjects, or units, all of the same duration. A total of 17 units are required to gain the Extended Diploma, Project being a double unit. During the course, a range of subjects are covered that introduce many aspects of mechanical, manufacturing and motor sport technology. These are complemented with other subjects to provide a sound basis for the needs of a mechanical, manufacturing or motor sport engineer.

You will need 5 GCSE’s in Mathematics, English Language, Science and Additional Science (minimum Grade C). Any other qualification or experience will need to be discussed with the Tutor. You will also be required to pass a trade test as-well as a literacy and numeracy test.
You will also be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).
Assessment is a combination of practical tests and written examinations.
