The programme has been developed for those who are intending to follow a career in either electrical or electronic engineering but wish to follow an alternative route to that of A Levels and sixth form.
The Extended Diploma is a full level 3 qualification and is considered equivalent to three A Levels for entry to an appropriate Higher education programme. Although largely academic the units of study contain significant practical elements.
The programme is vocationally orientated towards engineering and is aimed at those who have made this career choice and intend to join an appropriate apprenticeship or enter Higher Education.
All assessment tasks set during the first six weeks of year 1 must be completed successfully and on time to ensure progression to the remainder of the programme. Year 1 must be completed in full before progression onto year 2 can be considered.
The programme consists of associated subjects, or units, all of the same duration. A total of 17 units are required to gain the Extended Diploma. During the course, a range of subjects are covered that introduce many aspects of Electrical/Electronic technology. These are complemented with other subjects to provide a sound basis for the needs of an Electrical or Electronic engineer. All learners are required to complete at least 30 hours per year of self-directed study in preparation for work.
