The Advanced programme covers years two and three of a three year programme and will provide you the opportunity to develop more advanced skills and experience and progress towards employment in the lutherie trade. This course enables you to reach an advanced standard, develop guitars to your own designs, consolidating your experience and expertise to commercial standards. Upon successful completion you will be able to progress into employment as a luthier. During this course you will study; building classical and steel stringed guitars incorporating more complex techniques; learning alternative methods of constructing the sound box; making neck joints; creating complex rosette designs; other features of a professional standard instrument; basic repair techniques and development of the guitar. You will also learn to manufacture your own specialist hand tools used in guitar making, which are otherwise expensive to buy. This work will complete the Level 2 Performance Engineering Operations qualification.
You will need to already hold either a Level 2 Cabinet Making or Level 2 Guitar Foundation qualification. Those with equivalent woodworking experience will also be considered. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential and those from outside the UK and EU must also have a qualification in English at or above level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in order to apply for a Tier 4 student visa. You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).
Assessment is through practical work. A final test is externally moderated. A college certificate will be awarded to reflect pass, merit or distinction standards achieved
