If you want to pursue a career as a luthier then this is an excellent place to start. This course will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress through the levels of guitar making. This course enables you to reach an advanced standard, consolidating your experience and skills. The course equips students with the knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to progress onto the Advanced year.
Upon successful completion you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Guitar Making programme, preparing you for employment as a luthier.
During this course you will study: an introduction to the craft of making guitars using the ‘Spanish Method’; making the components of a guitar which includes: moulds and jigs, the neck, the soundboard and strutting, the rosette, the back and ribs, the fingerboard and bridge; assembling the different components of a guitar; sustainable sources of wood; the history and development of the guitar and manufacturing specialist hand tools used in guitar making – this work will complete the Level 2 Performance Engineering Operations qualification.

You will need to already hold a Level 1 Cabinet Making qualification or have equivalent woodworking experience. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential and those from outside the UK and EU must also have a qualification in English at or above level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in order to apply for a Tier 4 student visa.
You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).
Assessment is through practical work.
