If you want to pursue a career involving horses, then this is an excellent place to start. This course will introduce you to the underpinning skills and knowledge in horse-related subjects and giving you experience required develop your understanding. You will participate in daily yard skill sessions where you will be caring for the horses; mucking out; and tidying the yard. This work will be supervised by the college staff and you will be given advice and help on how to improve your work-related skills.
Successful completion of this programme could allow you to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care, preparing you for employment within the sector.
During this course you will explore both theoretical and practical subjects and you will study the following topics: Care of Animals (horses in particular) and Horse Riding Skills.
You will need to show riding and horse handling ability which will be assessed during a taster day (although riding experience is not essential). You will be required to attend an interview and taster day on ‘the yard’ and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report) along with evidence of specific and sustained interest and motivation in horses and the horse industry; and an ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.
Assessment is a combination of coursework and practical assessments.
