This combined knowledge and competency based qualification is ideal for new team leaders who want to develop themselves as leaders and managers. It provides learners with the opportunity to learn and implement the core skills needed in today’s dynamic business environment. The qualification also forms part of the ILM Level 2 Apprenticeship in Team Leading.
About this qualification
The qualification combines knowledge and competence qualification to give learners the opportunity to develop the core competencies needed by team leaders in today’s dynamic business world. First by imbedding the knowledge needed to complete the activities and tasks required by today’s team leaders and supervisors. Then by allowing those to display their competence in carrying out the tasks required as part of their day to day role.
What will learners be able to do?
The units in this qualification focus on the essential skills learners need to develop as team leaders. There are five mandatory units, looking at the principles of team leading and management, workplace communication, understanding business and personal development. Plus there is a wide selection of optional units to build management skills in a variety of areas such as customer service, health and safety and performance management.
Learners must achieve a minimum of 40 credits of which 22 credits will be from the mandatory units in Group A. The remaining 18 credits must be achieved from units in optional Groups B and C (Group B, a minimum of 12 credits; Group C a maximum of 6 credits).

Candidates will need to gather evidence of their performance in order to be assessed against the competence based learning outcomes in the qualification. Therefore, it is realistic to expect that candidates will be either practicing or aspiring team leaders.
The ILM Level 2 Diploma in Lead Leading provides for progression to qualifications for junior managers which include the ILM Level 3 VRQ Certificate in Leadership & Management or ILM Level 3 Diploma in Management (Combined Qualification).
How is the qualification assessed?
Assessment methods will differ depending on the nature of learning outcomes. Typically, knowledge-based learning outcomes will be assessed using written questions. Performance learning outcomes may be assessed using methods such as observation of real work, inspection of work products and witness accounts.
