The NEBOSH General Certificate programme is internationally recognised as a key qualification for those involved in managing health and safety and as a first step for those who want to make a career in health and safety.
The programme is aimed at those who are involved in health and safety activities in the workplace and want to be better informed OR those who want to get into health and safety.
This programme is targeted towards Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study.
The National General Certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK with over 100,000 people having gained the award since it was launched in 1989.
The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
Management of Health and Safety (NGC1)
Controlling workplace hazards (GC2)
Health and safety practical application (GC3)
The NEBOSH National General Certificate meets the academic requirements for Technician membership (TechIOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
The NEBOSH National General Certificate has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). It sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 with 15 SCQF credit points.
SCQF Level 6 is comparable to NQF/QCF Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. See the “Qualifications Can Cross Boundaries” chart issued by the UK regulators, available here: http://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/files_ccc/QualificationsCanCrossBoundaries.pdf
There are no specific barriers, in terms of academic qualifications, skills or experience to
entry to the NEBOSH National General Certificate programme. However, it should be noted
that currently the assessments are offered, and must be answered, in English only. The
qualification includes a requirement to write a short report based on the candidate’s own
workplace, which must also be in English. Candidates should discuss this with the accredited course provider before undertaking the qualification.
Units NGC1 and GC2 are taught units each assessed by a two-hour written examination. Each written examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions and one ‘long-answer’ question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.
Unit GC3 is assessed by a two-hour practical examination. This is held on a date set by the course provider and must be taken within 14 days of a written examination. The practical examination is internally assessed by the programme organiser and externally moderated by NEBOSH.
Candidates will be awarded a unit certificate for each unit passed. Once a candidate has successfully completes all three units (NGC1, GC2 and GC3), the overall qualification parchment will be issued
£995 including registration fees and books. There is no fee remission available for this course.
