If you want to pursue a career as a tuner or piano technician then this is an excellent place to start. This Foundation year is the first in a three year programme and will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress through the levels of piano tuning and restoration. This course enables you to reach an advanced standard, consolidating your experience and skills.
Upon successful completion you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Piano Tuning and Restoration, preparing you for employment as a piano tuner or technician.
During this course you will study: basic repairs to full restoration techniques; piano tuning; chipping up; repairs to the mechanism including replacing felts; case repair ; French polishing; materials and their application; the history, design and development of the piano; health and safety and manufacturing specialist hand tools used in piano making – this work will complete the Level 2 Performance Engineering Operations qualification.
You will need to show an interest in the piano industry. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential and those from outside the UK and EU must also have a qualification in English at or above level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in order to apply for a Tier 4 student visa.
You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).
Assessment is through practical work.
