The Advanced programme covers years two and three of a three year programme and will provide you the opportunity to develop more advanced skills and experience and progress towards employment in the piano tuning and restoration trade. This course enables you to reach an advanced standard, consolidating your experience and expertise to commercial standards. Upon successful completion you will be able to progress into employment as a piano tuner or technician. During this course, you will study: advanced aspects of piano tuning on both upright and grand pianos; minor maintenance tasks typically performed on customers’ pianos; full workshop restoration and refurbishment; upright and grand piano fine tuning; restringing; action (hammer mechanism) overhaul of upright and grand pianos; setting up and regulating; case restoration and polishing; study of acoustics; further tool making; elements of piano design and construction and preparation for employment or self-employment. You will also learn to manufacture your own specialist hand tools used in guitar making, which are otherwise expensive to buy. This work will complete the Level 2 Performance Engineering Operations qualification.
You will need to already hold a Foundation Piano Tuning and Restoration qualification or have equivalent tuning/restoration experience. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential and those from outside the UK and EU must also have a qualification in English at or above level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in order to apply for a Tier 4 student visa. You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).
