If you want to pursue a career in musical instrument craft then this is an excellent place to start. The Intermediate programme covers years two and three of four years and will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress through the levels of musical instrument craft.
Upon successful completion you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Violin Making and Instrument Repair, preparing you for progression or employment in the sector.
During the first year of this programme, you will study: violin making skills; the ‘Newark Method’; acoustics and violin making history; manufacturing specialist hand tools used in violin making and repair – this work will complete the Level 2 Performance Engineering Operations qualification.
During your second year, you will study: developing your skills by exploring the aesthetics and process of varnishing; progressing to fit up and make sound adjustments to your own instruments; a range of repair and restoration techniques; advanced requirements used in high-level professional workshops and extending your making skills in projects, such as Viola making.
