The Advanced programme covers years two and three of a four year programme and will provide you the opportunity to develop more advanced skills and experience and progress that includes repair work on violins and bows. Upon successful completion you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Violin Making and Instrument Repair, preparing you for progression or employment in the sector. During the first year you will study: violin making skills; the ‘Newark Method’; acoustics and violin making history; manufacturing specialist hand tools used in violin making and repair – this work will complete the Level 2 Performance Engineering Operations qualification. During your second year, you will study: developing your skills by exploring the aesthetics and process of varnishing; progressing to fit up and make sound adjustments to your own instruments; a range of repair and restoration techniques; advanced requirements used in high-level professional workshops and extending your making skills in projects, such as Viola making.
You will need to already hold either a Level 2 Cabinet Making or Violin Foundation qualification. Those with equivalent woodworking experience will also be considered. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential and those from outside the UK and EU must also have a qualification in English at or above level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in order to apply for a Tier 4 student visa. You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).
Assessment is through practical work.
