If you want to pursue a career in musical instrument craft then this is an excellent place to start. This Foundation year is the first in a three year programme and will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress through the levels of musical instrument craft. This course includes the a basic overhaul on a Clarinet, Flute, Oboe and Saxophone and you will gain skills in fault-finding.
Upon successful completion you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Woodwind Instrument Making and Repair, preparing you for employment within the sector.
During this course you will study, both theoretically and practically: fault-finding and repair techniques; turning wood and metal on a lathe; manufacturing of your own specialist hand tools – this work will complete the Level 2 Performance Engineering Operations qualification; materials and their application; the history and development of the woodwind instrument and health and safety.
You will need to show an interest in the woodwind industry. A good command of spoken and written English is also essential and those from outside the UK and EU must also have a qualification in English at or above level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in order to apply for a Tier 4 student visa.
You will be required to attend an interview and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report).
Assessment is through practical work.
